Memorizing Scripture

Over the last few months, in family devotions, we have had a memory verse for the week. We are currently using "Read the Bible Through By Its Stories" from Crown Publications. There is a passage of scripture to read and then you answer questions and at the bottom of every page is the memory verse for the week. So far our kids have learned 9 verses and also Psalm 100 (from Daniel's school memory work). They absolutely LOVE trying to see who can say the verse first and we make it a little friendly competition each morning. :) Sometimes Mommy gets to quote one! It really has helped all of us to learn more scripture. The Bible says we're to ourselves in Psalms etc., and it just so happens the first verses they have learned are in Psalms 119. Years ago when Steve was in the Bible Institute in Michigan, he learned around 450 verses many of which he can still quote off the top of his head to this day. So we are starting a 3X5 card file for each child who is learning verses and I type up a card for each one with the verse they have learned. Hopefully that box will be shoved full of 3X5 cards with God's Word on them by the time they're out of at least high school. :) I'm in the process of decorating each box to fit the child and also so we can tell them apart. I encourage each of you with small children, to never underestimate what they can learn! Even Caleb fills in some of the words when we quote it all together and he's only 2. I also want to encourage you to teach your children Scripture! What could it hurt? Maybe someday down the road at such a time in their life, the Holy Spirit will bring that verse back to their mind and keep them from making a terrible decision or to help them with a problem. Scripture is mighty powerful and the best thing we, as Christians, can do is to cram our childrens' minds FULL of it! Start today!
